The Tech Was Never the Hard Part
Bitcoin's quantum problem is a voting problem
Crypto's quantum reckoning finally has a date on it. Consensus among the firms building quantum computers now points to 2029 for a machine that could break the cryptography signing every Bitcoin transaction — and, for what it's worth, every bank's rails too. The twist is that the maths is the solvable part. Post-quantum defences will be ready well before that Q-Day; a bank can adopt them with a board resolution and a budget. Bitcoin can't. Any fix needs roughly 90% of miners to agree first, on a network with no boss — and the last big upgrade fight, over SegWit in 2017, split the chain into Bitcoin Cash and Bitcoin Gold. Bitcoin's cryptography isn't the fragile part. Its constitution is.
A rulebook that decides who does the buying
There's a governance story on the commercial side, too. Fewer than 20% of Europe's banks offer any crypto service — against roughly three-quarters in Switzerland — and Britain's incoming FCA rulebook looks set to decide who closes that gap. Rather than build a standalone regime like the EU's MiCA, the FCA folds crypto into the machinery that already governs investment firms: the same capital and client-asset demands, with customer coins segregated under trust. For a bank, that's a familiar extension; for a crypto-native startup, it's a governance-and-custody build from scratch, with an eye-watering bill long before any revenue. The likely upshot isn't a wave of new licences but a wave of acquisitions — a door meant to let challengers in mostly deciding who ends up buying them.

The maths to defend it will be ready years early — it's the vote to install it that nobody can schedule.
