A Chip Stock in a Hoodie
What's actually moving Bitcoin
Bitcoin barely moved this week, and that's the story. The coin held near $66,300 midweek — a two-week high, up about 3% on the week — but the calm on the crypto screen hides where the real action is. Bitcoin is riding the semiconductor rally that's hauled markets out of the red all month: a US chip gauge up more than 5%, South Korea's Kospi up 5%, Samsung and SK Hynix leading the charge. At the same time Japan's yen has slid past 163 to the dollar, a 40-year low. One of those is the textbook case for a fixed-supply asset; the other is what's actually setting the price. For now Bitcoin is trading less like digital gold than a chip stock in a hoodie — and that correlation cuts both ways.
Crypto's big bill, stuck on ethics
The week's other crypto story isn't really about crypto either; it's about who watches the watchmen. Washington's sweeping market-structure bill, the Clarity Act, has stalled on a single clause: an ethics ban that would stop the president, vice-president and every member of Congress from holding significant crypto. The bill itself — which would finally split oversight between the SEC and the CFTC — is all but agreed. What isn't is who enforces the ban: Democrats want state attorneys general, the White House insists on the federal Justice Department, soon to be run by the president's former personal lawyer. The hard deadline is 7 August, the last Senate sitting day before recess; miss it, and the whole thing slips toward autumn. Britain, the piece notes drily, cleared its crypto firms with rather less theatre.
Chips, a sinking yen, and a Senate ethics row — three forces moving crypto this week, and not one of them is crypto. The cards below, then the rest of the issue. — MJB
Washington finally has a crypto rulebook both parties claim they want — but the Crypto Clarity Act now hangs on one unresolved question: who gets to police an ethics ban on officials’ own crypto holdings. With the Senate’s summer recess bearing down, that one clause could sink the whole bill. The hard deadline is August 7.

Bitcoin barely budged on Wednesday, holding near $66,300 — but the calm on the crypto screen hides a loud story playing out everywhere else. The Bitcoin price is riding a second day of the semiconductor rally that has powered markets all month, even as Japan’s yen collapses to a 40-year low. For once, the action driving Bitcoin has almost nothing to do with Bitcoin.

There's a joke buried in here. The asset built to break free of governments and central banks spent the week taking its cue from a semiconductor index, a Japanese currency crisis, and a Senate turf war over who gets to police congressmen's coin holdings. Digital gold, apparently, still checks what the chip stocks are doing first. — MJB
